Working with & focusing on
what people can do.
The Chestnuts believe in a positive, ability-focused framework. This is the starting point for every individual we support.
Understanding Strengths
At The Chestnuts we understand that people with autism have definite strengths. We aim to support these strengths to balance any areas of difficulty someone may experience.
Good Autism Practice
The staff then support people with good autism practice, and help people to develop skills that are meaningful to them. We identify good autism practice as:
- Knowledge Integration Use of knowledge of autism to understand each person’s communication, thinking and sensory differences and the impact of these on daily living.
- Attention to Detail To facilitate development of individualised approaches, which acknowledge the person’s autism, enabling people to maximise their existing skills and lead meaningful lives.
